The Apotheosis Looks Different From Here reimagines the eighteenth-century engraving The Apotheosis of Captain Cook (1794), in which Cook is raised towards the heavens and transformed from navigator into an almost divine heroic figure. Here, Cook is removed from his ascension and returned to earth as a porcelain figurine: ornamented, manufactured and fragile. Behind him, detail from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages map reveals a continent already inhabited, named, known and understood through countless generations. The lifelike sulphur-crested cockatoo sits in contrast to the manufactured figure of Cook: living presence against historical object.T he work considers how historical figures are fashioned, idealised and handed down, and how familiar images can change once they are encountered through contemporary knowledge.

Framing
Professionally presented in a custom floating frame made from stained Native Mahogany. The solid timber frame is sustainably sourced, plantation grown and kiln dried, and under- and cross-pinned for strength and rigidity. Frame profile: 55 mm deep with a 10 mm front face.
