Dwell draws upon the familiar figure of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, removing her from the certainty of the cinematic narrative and placing her within a more ambiguous psychological landscape. Dorothy appears absorbed within a dreamlike environment of softened and repeated forms, accompanied by the distinctive presence of a bird in the foreground. Familiar imagery becomes less certain as figure and landscape begin to merge, creating a space that feels suspended somewhere between memory, imagination and place. Rather than depicting Dorothy’s journey towards home, Dwell considers the more complicated experience of inhabiting a place: of remaining, belonging and finding oneself within it. The familiar character becomes a way of exploring our own associations with home, memory and belonging.
